We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. The amount of healthcare organizations still using excel and hard copies for their credentialing is astounding. Not only is this system more difficult and less organized, but it’s also super time-consuming for you and your credentialing team.
If you are still completing and submitting your enrollment applications for Medicare by paper, we have good news! There is a much more efficient process that will expedite things and simplify your life exponentially: PECOS.
What is PECOS?
Provider Enrollment and Chain/Ownership System, or PECOS, is the electronic portal that allows physicians to enroll in Medicare. This search is used to determine if providers have registered with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Registering with PECOS is the first step in becoming a Medicare provider.
How do you register with PECOS?
The requirements are fairly minimal with the only real prerequisite being that you must have an NPI. With your NPI, you can easily set up an account and start the application process.
Once an account is created on the Identity & Access Management System, it will then transpose to all three incentive programs, giving you access to NPPES, PECOS, and EHR. This added benefit helps further expedite the enrollment process since all three programs are integral for healthcare organizations seeking to become Medicare providers.
Once registered, you can easily access PECOS with your login information. From here, you will then be able to create an initial enrollment application for individual providers or for group enrollment.
Benefits of using PECOS
Expedited application process. By completing the process all online, you eliminate wasted time spent filling out the Medicare application by hand, mailing it in and calling repeatedly to follow up. An added benefit is the ability to sign the application electronically. With PECOS, it’s a one-stop-shop and you’ll find the application approval will be completed much more rapidly.
Easily track approval status. A digital process means that once the application is submitted, it becomes extremely easy to track. Just log in to the portal and you can see the current status throughout the entire enrollment process.
Digital records. Just like tracking the status of your application, being digital helps with record-keeping. Staying organized is much easier and you now have the ability to go back and see the record of submission, giving you and your team peace of mind knowing things have been completed.
With Medicare having such a huge presence in the insurance industry, registering with PECOS will ultimately make the provider enrollment application process simpler for you and your team.
